Male Celebrities Who Wore Kilts and Broke the Internet

Celebrities are known for their daring fashion choices and mens kilts are no exception. Usually making headlines for their red carpet looks, there are some celebs that know how to steal all the spotlight with a single statement item. Kilts for men are easily one of those statement pieces that just can’t seem to stay out of the tabloids.

Steeped in a rich Irish and Scottish heritage, you can now find mens kilts for sale across men’s fashion retailers that are both high end and affordable. Today, designer kilts for men are becoming a staple in even men’s streetwear looks. With so much popularity around this look, plenty of male celebs were quick to jump on the kilt bandwagon and rock the hell out of it.

Here are some famous men wearing kilts on stage and the red carpet and worked the outfit probably better than pants.

  1. Kanye West

Where: Watch the Throne Tour with Jay-Z, Washington, DC
Kilt Design: black leather kilt

Anyone that knows of Kanye West knows that he’s not afraid to tell it like it is, but that also goes for wearing it like it is. During his concert tour with Jay-Z, West was all the rage in his black Givenchy utility kilt. He stylishly layered his gothic kilt over (what looked like) black leather leggings, black graphic hoodie, black graphic t-shirt, and high-top sneakers. Going full-on monochromatic was a smart move, as it gave his casual look a slightly more elegant feel.

2.              Jared Leto

Where: iHeartRadio Music Awards
Kilt Design: black utility kilt

Some people were slightly confused by Leto’s mens kilt, but that’s just what he does best. Usually going over the top with his clothing style (whether the cameras are watching or not), Leto went for a grunge-meets-formal outfit by pairing his solid black utility kilt with a bright blue blazer, paisley button-down shirt, black slim-fit pants, slip-on sneakers, and aviator sunglasses. His full beard and sunkissed, shoulder-length hair pulls the whole outfit together like he was born to be a rockstar.

3.              P. Diddy

Where: MTV Crashes Glasgow
Kilt Design: navy plaid kilt

Also known as “Puff Daddy,” P. Diddy knows how to mesh his streetwear roots with a traditional plaid kilt. While performing on stage in Scotland, he donned a black jacket and vest combo with knee-high leather boots, chunky cross necklaces, and a black snapback hat. We’re used to seeing him rocking the latest streetwear designs, so this was a refreshing change from his usual urban style. Similar to West, he also went monochromatic with his black utility kilt, which made the blue plaid stand out even more.

4.              R. Kelly

Where: The American Music Awards
Kilt Design: black zippered leather kilt

R. Kelly ignited the American Music Awards in 2013 with his black leather utility kilt by pairing it with the hottest urban pieces. Designed with a horizontal gold zipper on front, his leather kilt stacked up nicely over slouchy skinny pants. Paired with a longline button-down shirt and black bomber jacket, he took all the latest style notes from what’s trending in urban streetwear.

5.              Jonathan Scott (Property Brothers)

Where: 66th Primetime Emmy Awards
Kilt Type: green plaid kilt

You might be thinking of that popular photo of one of the Property Brothers twins lifting his plaid kilt in front of the paparazzi. This bold look was paired with very formal pieces that clearly belong at a red carpet event, which only shows how versatile kilts for men can be in any scene. His dark green plaid kilt was stylishly paired with a structured slim-fit blazer, black tie, black dress shoes, and knee-high black socks.
