The Best Movies Featuring Famous Men Wearing Kilts

If there’s one thing we can agree on about kilts, it’s that some of Hollywood’s most famous (and good-looking) men have worn them in films. Surprisingly, they’re not all strictly Scottish or Irish films either. We’ve seen kilts for men pop up in thrillers, dramas and even chick flicks. While these aren’t all Oscar-worthy movies, we found movies that anyone can appreciate simply for its kilt appearances. Just the sight of famous men in kilts might make you want to own one yourself! Here are the films where you can catch the biggest male stars wearing kilts for men.

1.    Braveheart (1995) – Mel Gibson

This is probably the most famous kilt movie to ever go down in kilt history. As you might already know, Mel Gibson is the star of the movie and plays WilliamWallace. He dons a full-on military kilt that was more like a one piece that draped over his shoulder.

The unfortunate part is that they say Gibson’s kilt is actually an inaccurate description of that time period. The movie takes place in the 13th Century, but men didn’t start wearing kilts until the 17thCentury. Despite this wardrobe mishap, we can still appreciate the amazing cinematography and acting skills.

2.    Formula 51 (2001) – Samuel L. Jackson

There are far and few movies where we don’t see Samuel L. Jackson playing the main character of an action/thriller movie. Formula 51 is packed with drug dealing, car chasing and bone breaking. More importantly, he does it all in a men’s kilt.

Jackson stars as a chemist named Elmo on the run from a drug deal gone awry. Throughout the film, you’ll catch him wearing men’s kilts with casual pieces, like chunky turtlenecks and military boots. However, they also keep his kilt look traditional by adding a sporran around his waist. The fact that he kicks butt in kilts for men is enough to make this movie pretty iconic for kilt lovers.

3.    Intolerable Cruelty (2003) – George Clooney

Although Intolerable Cruelty wasn’t George Clooney’s finest film, it’s one of the few films where he makes an appearance in a kilt. This romantic comedy features Clooney as a successful divorce lawyer that starts falling for his client’s wife, a role played by Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Despite this film’s mixed reviews, most people can appreciate the fact that Clooney weds Zeta-Jones in kilted garb. The scene was even referenced in The New York Times, which makes you feel like it deserved more recognition than it got. Out of the above films mentioned, Clooney donned the most formal look with his black-tie outfit paired with a red, tartan kilt.

4.    Made of Honor (2008) – Patrick Dempsey

This is a die-hard chick flick starring none other than Patrick Dempsey – Grey’s Anatomy’s McDreamy. He usually plays the quintessential dreamboat on television, which he plays just as well in Made of Honor. Plus, you get to catch him wearing an above-the-knee plaid kilt in this film.

Without giving away any movie spoilers, there’s a scene where Dempsey flexes his muscles as he participates in the Highland Games in a red, plaid kilt. It’s paired in somewhat traditional Scottish style with a thick leather belt, button-down shirt, knee-high socks and ghillie boots.
